Hollywood's instantly recognizable Capitol Records Building, a cylindrical landmark designed by Welton Becket, is currently in the midst of its most significant structural upgrade since its completion in 1956. Located at 1750 N Vine St, the building is undergoing an extensive seismic retrofit and a comprehensive interior renovation, a project estimated to cost upwards of $120 million.

The seismic strengthening involves the installation of new shear walls and base isolation technology, designed to protect the building from major earthquake events. 'Preserving this piece of Los Angeles history while ensuring its safety for decades to come is a monumental task,' stated Dr. Elena Petrova, lead structural engineer for the project from Thornton Tomasetti. 'The challenge lies in integrating modern engineering solutions without compromising the building's original architectural integrity.'

Beyond the structural work, the interior renovation is modernizing office spaces, recording studios, and common areas. While the famous ground-floor studios, where legends like Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys recorded, will retain their classic aesthetic, they are receiving significant acoustic and technological upgrades. 'We're bringing these studios into the 21st century while honoring their unparalleled legacy,' commented Steve Barnett, Chairman and CEO of Capitol Music Group, during a press briefing.

The project, which began in late 2024, is scheduled for completion in mid-2028. During this period, many Capitol Music Group operations have temporarily relocated to nearby facilities. The renovation also includes significant energy efficiency upgrades, such as new HVAC systems and LED lighting, aiming for LEED Gold certification. The building's distinctive spire, which spells 'Hollywood' in blinking lights, will also receive a full refurbishment.
