Hollywood's Sunset Las Palmas Studios Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plans

2026-04-28Variety / Hollywood ReporterDevelopment

Sunset Las Palmas Studios in Hollywood has announced an ambitious expansion project, including the addition of new soundstages, production offices, and post-production facilities. This multi-million dollar investment aims to solidify Los Angeles' position as a global entertainment production hub amidst fierce competition.

The historic Sunset Las Palmas Studios, located at 6040 Sunset Blvd, is embarking on a significant redevelopment that will add over 200,000 square feet of new production space. The plans include the construction of three state-of-the-art soundstages, a new five-story office building dedicated to production and post-production companies, and extensive upgrades to existing infrastructure.

'This expansion is a direct response to the unprecedented demand for production space driven by the streaming wars and content boom,' said Michael K. Smith, CEO of Hudson Pacific Properties, which owns and operates the studio. 'We are committed to keeping Hollywood at the forefront of global entertainment production by providing cutting-edge facilities that attract top-tier talent and projects.'

The project, designed by Gensler, will incorporate sustainable building practices, including rooftop solar panels, water-efficient landscaping, and energy-efficient systems. The new soundstages will feature advanced acoustic design and flexible layouts to accommodate a wide range of film and television productions.

This investment comes at a crucial time for Los Angeles, as other states and countries offer generous tax incentives to lure productions away. Industry experts believe that modern, purpose-built facilities like those planned for Sunset Las Palmas are vital for maintaining LA's competitive edge.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, following city approvals, with a projected completion in late 2029. The expansion is anticipated to create hundreds of construction jobs and thousands of permanent jobs in the entertainment sector, further bolstering the local economy. The studio will remain operational throughout the construction period, with careful phasing to minimize disruption.
